This is all about room 5 and our strengths!

Today we did an encouragement activity and we had to put strengths about each other on our names. This made us feel strong and confident about who we are and what we look like to our friends. I was surprised people thought I was good at reading. It makes me feel better about that. I had lots of kind ones (Leah) Someone called me smart. I was shocked because I only thought I was sort of smart. (Piringi) This game is cool and we recommend it to other classes!

Room 5 loved the symposium yesterday. Thank you to those parents that came along to join in. We did a presentation about minecraft. Click this link to see how minecraft helps us learn. Link

We wrote recounts about our experiences on the day. Please see our individual blogs to read them.

Today Room 5 learnt some more about adverbs and how to put them in different parts of the sentence. You can put them in the beginning, in the middle and at the end to change the structure of your sentences. This makes the writing more interesting to read.

This is a link to our activity.

Room 5 learnt about how to improve sentence structure in writing this week. They learnt how using adverbs in different places in the sentence can make their paragraph more interesting and it can also tell the reader more information about what is happening. An adverb is how something is done. eg. Running quickly or swarming aggressively.

Adverbs are cool and make our writing better!

Here are great examples. Click on the link to follow.

Today we all enjoyed the discovery of static electricity. We quickly rubbed the balloons on the carpet and our hair to charge them. We found that the two charged balloons repelled each other and we found that if we charged the balloon we could pick up little bits of paper. We think it couldn't pick up the big piece of paper because it was too heavy.

Welcome to 2015

Hi everyone and welcome to 2015 and Room 5. The summer was absolutely fantastic and I had some amazing new experiences I shall remember for a long time. The stories of adventures from children also sounded exciting and it was pleasing to see so many happy faces on the first day of school.

This term is busy busy busy with plenty of exciting activities planned

Swimming - Yes we are swimming and I'm hoping for the whole term. Our swimming days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Swimming caps are not compulsory but if you prefer your child to wear one place it in with their togs and towel. At present only half the class is bringing togs so lets see if we can increase our numbers.

ASB Talk - Today we had an hour long interactive fun visit from the ASB to introduce the concepts of saving money. The children realised very quickly what a great idea it is to have money in the bank for a rainy day.

Chromebooks - With our chromebook day this week many children are extremely excited. Its important children receive their chromebook quickly and become familiar with the operating system and the protocols when using it at school. Parents can help with this process by filling in the paperwork and attending the meetings. Also making sure the payments are up to date helps our office staff.

Kiwi Visit - On 6 March we are heading to Kiwi North. Children will look through the museum, go on a bush walk, get to use microscopes and explore types of avian food. The highlight of the trip will be watching the kiwis have their lunch.

Unicycling - This term we are privileged to have Christian take uni-cycling again and the children just love it especially when he does a few of his jumps and spectacular tricks. Its great to have an inspirational young role model in our school.

Football - Dan from Northland Football will be coaching groups of children providing an opportunity for the enthusiastic football stars.

Leadership Roles - As always children will have the opportunity to take on school wide or classroom roles. Its great to see so many children keen to help and I will encourage all children to have a go at these roles.

Please remind children to bring a hat to school. This is so important with our harsh sun in Northland.

If any parents would like to say hi and have a chat about the start of the year or any other areas please feel free to make an appointment.

Keep smiling and shining

Nathan

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Next Monday and Tuesday I will be available after school for parent - teacher interviews. Please ring the office to make a time so we avoid double bookings.

If you would like to meet at a different time (before school or lunchtimes) or day please contact me directly. You can phone or text.

I'm more than happy to discuss your child's progress over the phone if you are unable to come to school. If this is the case text me and I will ring back.

Show Not Tell

Room 5 are working on making our writing more interesting. We are taking a boring sentence and making it come alive by showing not telling the highlighted words.

WALT show not tell in our writing

She was happy and excited when she went for a swim on the hot sunny day with her best friend.

How do we feel, look like, and what do we do when we are happy and excited? (SHOW)

How can we SHOW she went for a swim?

How can we SHOW the hot sunny day?

How can we SHOW a best friend?

WILF
I will begin by describing what the characters body felt like.
I will describe what has happened using my senses.
I will describe what they were thinking
I will leave the audience hanging

REMEMBER TO
·                     Write in the third person

·                     Use capital letters and full stops.

Welcome to Term 4

Welcome to term 4 everyone. There is only nine weeks of school left for the year with lots of learning still to happen! This term we have our Athletics Day coming up along with Parent-Teacher interviews and reports.

Have a look at the Online Cloze Reading we are doing in class and children can practice at home as well. This is one way to support comprehension and understanding when reading a story. We use 5 strategies to support our learning and picking the right word

  1. Looking for capital letters because we know sentences start with a capital letter.
  2. Does the sentence make sense with the word we are using?
  3. Try all the words to see what word makes the most sense.
  4. Read on past the blank space to help gain more meaning.
  5. Look for words in the text that have a relationship with a word in the list (garden -overgrown, window - broken, running - feet)
We are all looking forward to a great term.

Continue the story

Can you continue the story?

Stretched beyond all possible limits his gaze into the the distance was unbroken. A sea of sand lay before him. Behind was a cloud of smoke and the smell of burning rubber tweaked his nostril hairs as he gulped down fresh air. A puddle of water mixed with bubbling oil quickly disappeared and vapourised into oblivion. Moving slowly, head pounding, he started putting one foot in front of the other. He only had one chance...

What Animal is Me?

If you could be any animal what would you pick? Maybe a cuddly puppy or an enormous crocodile? Would you like to soar the sky's like an eagle or travel the dark depths of the ocean like a whale?

For me its all about cruising!!! I would like to be a Galapagos Tortoise. Not do much, other than swimming the warm oceans and sunbathing on golden sand. Maybe a bite to eat every now and then and lots of sleep.

So who would you like to be and why?

Quoting Quotes and Saying Sayings

Often famous or well known people have said something important, funny, thought provoking, ridiculous, or a sentence that simply makes no sense at all. Then over time others will use what they said when they talk or write.

Do you have a quote or saying you know or like? Maybe your parents or grandparents use one? If not, see if you can find one and tell us why you picked it. Don't forget to think about cartoon characters as well. Sometimes they come up with some real crack-ups!

One of my favourites.
